Under the Australian Standard AS/NZS3760:2022 certain types of electrical equipment must be regularly inspected and tested by a competent person to identify damage, wear and detect electrical faults.

All employers and self-employed people have a legal responsibility to ensure that their workplace's portable plug-in electrical equipment is completely safe. This includes ensuring that the equipment is regularly inspected, tested and maintained by a competent person.
 
Any item of equipment that plugs into an electrical socket should be tested at regular intervals. The intervals can be varied dependant on factors such as heat, dust, moisture, vibration, mechanical, chemical or environmental factors.

Tests under AS/NZS 3760:2022 can include:
Insulation Resistance
Leakage Current testing
Polarity
Earth Resistance
Visual Test for splits/cuts in leads, damaged guards and cracked or split plugs.
